How to install a single cctv camera

Color Infrared Dome Camera

How do I install a CCTV Camera: A Simple Procedure

For this first procedure we will assume you are installing one security camera indoors and you will NOT be connecting it to a digital video recorder (DVR).

1. Select the area you want to observe and select the placement of the surveillance camera.

For instance, I'll be putting this camera in the living room so I can keep an eye on an elderly relative from my workshop, without having to be in that part of the house all of the time. This relative is prone to falls, so that is my primary concern for surveillance. If I hear a noise I can easily look up from my bench and see what is happening.

2. Attach the bracket to the wall or ceiling.

I chose the ceiling in a far corner so I can watch the whole room at once. That way, by using a wide angle lens camera, I don't have to worry too much about something happening outside the zone the camera can see.

3. Attach the power cable to the camera, and attach video cable.

4. Plug in the power supply.

5. Test the camera before placing it.

I don't have a test monitor so I used a spare portable television set with an auxiliary video input. It's not a hundred percent necessary to test the camera, but it sure makes things easier if you suddenly discover a problem now, before it's in place.

6. Attach the camera to the bracket. Aim the camera.

7. Route the power and video cables so they are out of the way and safe from accidental damage.

8. Connect your monitor.

9. Check aim and focus. Make necessary adjustments until you are satisfied.

That's it. Your simple surveillance system is up and running. Of course it's only good when you are there to watch it, since there's no recording equipment attached. See the next procedure if you want to go up one level and start using a DVR with this setup.
