Passive Powered CAT5 Video Balun

powered balun
Create Powered CAT5 Cable for your Surveillance Camera!

The STI-B45PW is passive balun coupled with power adapter circuitry that sends 12VDC over CAT5 cable. Using two of these powered baluns you can connect a camera at a location up to 50M away using ONLY the CAT5 cable - no need to provide an additional power supply at your camera location. This can be useful in many ways, especially when connecting cameras in remote locations such as the top of a pole, or in a back yard away from power taps. You will need two STI-B45PW units. Follow the procedure below if this is what you have in mind.

First, create or purchase a compatible female power connector. (All STI-45PW baluns have the same power connector as supplied from the manufacturer (a male connector), so this is an unavoidable step.) You can purchase a connector at an electronics store, or use the connector from an old camera you no longer use.

NOTE: Make sure you have the power polarity correct.

1. Connect the female power connector (the one you made, or one you purchased) to the male power connector on the STI-45PW balun at you monitor location.

2. Connect the balun to your monitor input.

3. Connect CAT5 cable to the RJ45 styel connector on the balun.

At your camera location:

1. Connect the second balun to the camera.

2. Connect the CAT5 cable to the RJ45 style connector on the balun.

3. Connect the power supply connector on the balun to the power input connector on your camera.

4. Apply power to the balun at the monitor side of the the CAT5 cable.

5. Your system is complete. Power is now being routed through the CAT5 cable to your surveillance camera.

As an alternate method, you can also use an STI-B4HPW (4 port power hub) with a STI-B45PW balun for powering CAT5 cables. This eliminates the need to make a female power connector for the balun on the monitor side.
